A hotel room, a long-standing friendship and a hair-raising plan!
BAFTA and Golden Globe award-winning Stephen Merchant (The Office, Extras, Hello Ladies) stars with critically acclaimed actor Steffan Rhodri (Gavin & Stacey, Harry Potter, Posh) in this sharply written and darkly comic play from Richard Bean, writer of the smash hit, One Man, Two Guvnors.
Ted (Stephen Merchant) has a master plan to revolutionise the world – and with help from his best friend Morrie (Steffan Rhodri) and his trusty video camera, it may just go global!
But Morrie begins to suspect that Ted’s in trouble as unpaid bills and cryptic phone calls start to mount; and as the world closes in on their hotel room in this poignant and touching comedy, there is only one way out…
Stephen Merchant (Ted)
BAFTA, Golden Globe and Emmy Award winner Stephen Merchant began his career as a stand-up comedian, before becoming co-writer, co-director and performer in the hit series The Office.
Stefan Rhodri (Morrie)
Steffan is about to open Rufus Norris’ inaugural season at The National Theatre, appearing in Light Shining in Buckinghamshire which is directed by Artistic Associate, Lyndsey Tuner. Steffan is most well-known for his portrayal of Dave Coaches in the BAFTA award winning BBC hit comedy Gavin & Stacey.

Stephen Merchant had flashes of comedy genius but overall the play was not as compelling as I had hoped. But, given that the the main themes were poignancy and powerlessness, the fact that the play's run had been cut short (and last night was ... the last night), it was a perfect example of life imitating art. Would love to see Stephen in more productions, though.
Left at the interval was a shame to see such a big star be wasted on a poorly written play. Half the audience were asleep before the interval.
A decent play. Both solid performances but something seemed lacking. Merchant, who is a fine comic actor was less convincing as a vulnerable character. Worth seeing, excellent set and venue.

Steven Merchant's range is too limited to sustain interest over a full length piece like this. He uses essentially one tone of voice throughout. The relationship between the two main characters was not particularly believable. Disappointing.
Very funny storyline, acted well.
Enjoyable evening - nice theatre. The acting was good, but the play is a little weak. Not quite a comedy, not quite anything else. It entertained at a certain level, but did not really stir the emotions. Merchant is fine - he is quite convincing as someone who has lost his marbles!
It was a play of two halves. With the second part being by far the strongest. Funny, sad, excellent!
Given he tickets were only £19 each I enjoyed it for what it was worth. It's laugh out load funny in certain places, definitely very British humour and keeps interest throughout. Would I have paid any more to see it? No..... But a good night out for the price.
Dark, funny and touching with a great surprise ending. We loved it
Bit slow going in parts but some funny moments particularly in the second half.

I was fortunate enough to see The Mentalists this week thanks to London Theatre Direct. The Wyndham's Theatre never ceases to amaze me at how beautiful it is. With its bespoke pale eggshell blue wallpaper it's like sitting in a Victorian front parlour with its picture frame stage.

Since his all-conquering One Man, Two Guvnors, playwright Richard Bean has been on something of a roll to put it mildly: Pitcairn at Chichester and the Globe; Great Britain, his play about the phone hacking scandal, at the National and then transferring to the West End; the book for the ridiculously short-lived musical Made In Dagenham, and a revival of his debut play Toast at the Park Theatre.
Now comes a new production of The Mentalists at Wyndham’s Theatre, a two-hander that premiered at the National in 2002.
